Ancient Artifacts
A downloadable game
I got the idea for this game when trapped in quarantine with nothing much else to do. Obviously there is a lot of inspiration from Hearthstone (as far as using their art, sorry about that!). But I wanted to take the core ruleset of Hearthstone (gaining mana each turn) and turn that into something else. I think that the idea of having an ever-expanding set of "mana" or money or whatever you want to call it, is very powerful. I wanted to take that ruleset and create another game that was more character focused. I felt that in a lot of my time playing hearthstone the characters factored into it very little, who they are, what they meant didn't really matter. Perhaps that the mindset of someone who was netdecking and only really going for the win, but I wanted to see if I could make a game focused on character.
I think that the heroes is a possible avenue towards that character based card game. Evie and Evan are with the player the entire time they're playing, and one of the main ways to win is to evolve them and make them incredibly powerful. But that's also a danger, I need to find the right balance. Newer players (especially people who are not used to card games) tunnel on evolving as the only viable way of winning. In reality there are so many other ways to win.
While this is still a WIP I think that progress is continuing on steadily. There are a few cards that I'm worried about being too strong (animated statue, glacial prison, and wealthy socialite mainly). But I'll only know through contiual playtesting, so that's what I plan to do. One change I think I will implement is making "legendary" (one of a kind) cards have a flipped over version. I love cards that have a backside on purpose, because you know when your opponent is about to draw it. This creates an element of strategy unique to the game I think. You know your enemy is about to draw a powerful card, but they might be holding something really good already. Do you wait, or not?
Upcoming are 2 more decks, one with 2 heroes, and another centered around traps.
